CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team played two closely fought games against Cortland on Sunday's doubleheader. Oneonta (16-8-1, 6-2 SUNYAC) fell 5-3 in the opener and then dropped an 11-inning 6-5 game to Cortland (16-10, 7-3 SUNYAC).
Cortland brought in three runs in the bottom of the second. Nick Marola hit a two-RBI single to make it 3-0. Oneonta responded in the top of the third and loaded the bases. Senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled through the right side to bring in runs from junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) and freshman Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). Senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) scored on a throwing error to tie 3-3.
Nick Marola hit a home run in the fourth to give Cortland a 4-2 lead, and another home run from Zachary Kringdon in the sixth made it 5-3.
Foglia batted 3-for-3 with two RBI. Jacoby added two hits and a run, while Monserrat had two hits and a run.
Kringdon went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Marola was 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Freshman Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) pitched 6.0 innings with seven hits, five runs, and five strikeouts. Junior Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) went 2.0 innings with two hits and one strikeout.
Luis Misla pitched 6.0 innings with seven hits, three runs, and ten strikeouts.
Oneonta came back from being down 3-1 in the second game to force extra innings. In the top of the seventh, freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored on a ground-out, and senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) stole home to tie 3-3. Cortland answered in the bottom of the frame when Marc Stockhausen hit a home run to left field. Cortland scored again in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to take a two-run lead.
Oneonta tied in the ninth when Monserrat singled in runs from senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) and Dwyer.
Neither side scored in the 10th, and Cortland struck out two batters in the top of the 11th. Luke Schartner pinch hit in the bottom of the inning, and a walk-off single ended the game at 6-5.
Oneonta plays Cortland on Mon. Apr. 14 at 3 p.m.
