TROY, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team scored three runs in the ninth but ultimately fell 8-6 to RPI on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 12-5-1 overall, while the Engineers move to 13-6.
RPI's Liam Riordan held Oneonta without a hit through the first six innings. The Engineers took a 3-0 lead in the first, with Aidan Hicks scoring on a throwing error. Jon Primerano reached home on a passed ball, and Kameron Levesque doubled home a runner.
Oneonta scored in the third, with senior Alez Wurster scoring on a sacrifice fly from senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River).
RPI scored again in the fifth when Robbie Reddington singled in runs from Owen Burnsworth and Walker Abdallah to go ahead 5-1. The Engineers loaded the bases in the sixth and walked in a pair of runs to push the lead to seven.
In the top of the seventh, senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) singled in two runs from Wurster and junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) to cut the lead to 8-3. The Red Dragons looked to come back in the top of the ninth. Oneonta's first two batters struck out, but freshman Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) walked to reach first. Jacoby singled, and a pitch hit senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) to load the bases. Dwyer walked in a run, and freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled Jacoby home to make it 8-5. Senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) brought in another run before the final batter flew out.
Jacoby finished 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Dwyer added two RBI.
Primerano was 3-for-4 with two runs.
Freshman Wyatt Braun (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) went 3.0 innings with five hits, three runs, and four strikeouts.
Riordan went 6.2 innings with no hits, three runs, and two strikeouts.
Oneonta next travels to face Hamilton on Tue. Apr. 1 at 4 p.m.
