ONEONTA, N.Y. - A nearly four-and-a-half-hour game was called in the 13th inning due to darkness, with the Oneonta baseball team tying No. 25 Brockport 9-9 on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons (11-5-1) led 6-1 to start the ninth before the Golden Eagles (14-1-1) scored five runs to force extra innings.
After three straight 1-2-3 innings, Oneonta scored in the bottom of the third. Wurster reached home on a third-baseman error to make it 1-0. The Red Dragons added three more runs in the fifth, with RBI singles from Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River), Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), and Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) to take a 4-0 lead.
Brockport got on the board in the seventh when Victor Alongi led off with a double down the left-field line. Alongi scored on a groundout to cut the lead to three runs.
Another Golden Eagles' error in the seventh led to Cronin reaching home. Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled in a run from freshman Travis Gfrerer (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) to go up 6-1.
Brockport loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, and Zach Eldred singled home a run. The Golden Eagles leveled the score from a Kyle Blake RBI single.
During extra innings, neither side scored until the top of the 13th. Blake doubled in a run, and Matthew Coon hit a two-RBI single to go up 9-6. Senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) tied with a three-RBI double in the bottom of the frame. The officials called the game due to darkness after the third out to conclude with a tie.
Jacoby, Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown), and Wurster recorded three hits, while Dywer tacked on two. Jacoby led the team with three RBI, and Gfrerer had two runs.
Eldred, Blake, and Alongi all had three hits. Blake had a run and two RBI, while Coon had two RBI.
Senior Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) went 7.0 innings with five hits, one run, and seven strikeouts. Anthony Lapine went 4.2 innings with seven hits, four runs, and six strikeouts.
Oneonta next plays at RPI on Sat. Mar. 29 at 2 p.m.
