Softball Competes in Ulili Softball Invitational in Hawaii

HONOLULU, H.I. -- The Oneonta softball team spent their spring break in Honolulu, Hawaii and participated in the Ulili Softball Invitational. The Red Dragons went 3-5 during the trip and improved to 5-7 this season.

Oneonta dropped the opening doubleheader to Messiah, 4-3 and 16-2 in five innings. They secured their first win of the trip on day two with an 8-3 victory over Sewanee before they fell short to Emory, 4-2. Following a day off, the team split a doubleheader with another victory over the Tigers, 10-6, and were stumped by Drew University, 9-4. The Red Dragons split their final doubleheader of the trip as they bested Puget Sound, 5-4, then were defeated by Emory, 11-0, in five innings.

Day One: Oneonta 3, Messiah 4
Senior Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) led the trip off with a lead-off home run, the 20th home run of her career, to give Oneonta an early 1-0 lead, however Messiah tied it with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. The Falcons took a 4-1 lead with three runs off of two triples in the bottom of the fourth.

The Red Dragons made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth. Junior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) reached on a fielding error then advanced to third when sophomore Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary (Va.)) smacked a double down the left field line to get the pair in scoring position. Sophomore Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) brought both runners home with a double to right field. Brown attempted to extend her hit to a triple but was tagged out on the play.

Oneonta had the tying run on second base with one out in the seventh when Serena worked a walk and advanced on a passed ball, however Messiah recorded the final two outs to end the game.

Serena finished the game 1-for-2 with the solo home run and two walks, Brown went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Brown was tagged with the loss after she pitched 3.1 innings, struck out three, and allowed four runs on seven hits. Senior Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) pitched 2.2 innings and struck out three batters.

Messiah's Fallon Feaser got the win as she pitched 6.2 innings, struck out two and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits.

Day One: Oneonta 2, Messiah 16 (5 innings)
Messiah got out to an 8-1 lead in game two after the second inning. Oneonta scored their run in the bottom of the second when junior Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) reached base on a single and scored off a single by junior Cailin Hall (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot).

The Falcons extended their lead to 16-1 with four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman Kayla Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) reached on an error then advanced to third and home on a couple of wild pitches for the 16-2 final.

Silliman, Kean, and Hall all recorded a hit in the game. Senior Angelina Scalere (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) was tagged with the loss after she pitched 3.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed 10 earned runs. Brennan pitched 1.2 innings, struck out one, and allowed four runs.

Day Two: Oneonta 8, Sewanee 3
Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. The Red Dragons got runners on the corners with a leadoff double from Serena then a single by Cardello. Serena scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Following a single by Brown, senior Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) scored Cardello with a single. Kean ended Oneonta's rally with a two-run double.

Sewanee scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single from Sadie Meacham.

The Red Dragons scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 8-1. Cardello worked a two-out walk in the top of the fourth then scored on Thys' single to right field. Thys came home with a single from Brown. In the fifth inning, Kean worked a four-pitch walk and sophomore Maya Nelsen (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) singled to get a pair of runners on. Serena brought both runners in with a two-run single.

Sewanee recorded two runs in the seventh inning to make it an 8-3 game with one out, however Oneonta ended the game with a double play.

Serena finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Kean went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of walks. Brown and Mangone each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Brown earned the win with 6.0 innings pitched, nine strikeouts, and allowed one run on four hits. Junior Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) pitched the final inning for the Red Dragons.

Day Two: Oneonta 2, Emory 4
Emory went ahead in the first inning off a fielding error, then Oneonta scored two runs in the top of the second. Silliman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on an error during Kean's at-bat. Silliman scored off another Eagle error, while Kean made it to third, then Kean crossed home on a squeeze bunt from Nelsen.

In the bottom half of the second, Emory tied the game at two on a ground ball. The Eagles hit back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning to go up 4-2.

The Red Dragons worked three walks to load the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, but the game ended on an infield flyout.

Brown finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Pitching stats are messed up.

Day Three: No Games

Day Four: Oneonta 10, Sewanee 6
Oneonta recorded the first six runs of the game for a 6-0 lead after three innings. Brown and Mangone hit back-to-back two out RBI doubles in the bottom of the first. Hall and Cardello each had an RBI single and Serena hit a sacrifice fly in the second, then freshman Riley McDonnell (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman) scored on a wild pitch in the third for the six-run lead.

Sewanee got their first run in the fourth inning then Oneonta answered with two more in the bottom half of the inning to go up 8-1. Cardello smacked another RBI single then scored on a single by Brown.

Both teams recorded two runs in the sixth inning to make it a 10-3 game. Ansley Giffin had an RBI triple for the Tigers then scored on a grounder, while Brown ripped an RBI double for the Red Dragons then crossed home one a ground out.

Sewanee pulled within four runs, 10-6, in the top of the seventh off a one-run double and a two-run triple, but Oneonta forced an infield popup to end the game.

Brown went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Cardello finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Serena, Hall, and Mangone each had a hit and an RBI.

Torgersen received the win as she pitched 5.0 innings, struck out four, and allowed three runs on four hits. Scalere pitched the final two innings, struck out one, and allowed three runs on four hits.

Day Four: Oneonta 4, Drew 9
Oneonta tallied three runs in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead. Serena led the inning off with a triple to right field and Cardello worked a walk. Thys brought Serena home on a single to left field. After Brown singled to load the bases, Mangone scored Cardello on a grounder then Silliman hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Thys.

Drew scored nine unanswered runs with six in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. Freshman Isabella Pagano (Merrick, N.Y.) recorded the Red Dragons final run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to right field that scored Silliman.

Thys, Brown, and Kean all recorded two hits in the game, Thys added an RBI. Brown was tagged with the loss after she pitched 1.2 inningsm struck out two and allowed six runs, five earned, on three hits. Brennan pitched 4.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits, and Scalere pitched the final inning and struck out one.

Day Five: Oneonta 5, Puget Sound 4
Oneonta scored the game's first five runs against Puget Sound to take a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Red Dragons used multiple base runners to their advantage in the first and scored two runs off a wild pitch and a double steal attempt.

They added another two runs in the fourth with an RBI single from Kean and a bunt from Nelsen that scored McDonnell. Oneonta got their final run with another RBI single from Kean that went down the right field line and scored Brown.

Puget Sound scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning off a triple and a sacrifice fly. The Loggers made it a one-run game with one out in the bottom of the seventh off a ground out and an RBI single. Puget Sound got the winning run on base with two outs, but Brennan struck out the final batter for Oneonta to hold on to the win.

Kean went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Thys and Mangone recorded a hit. Brown went 4.0 innings for the win, struck out three, and allowed two runs on four hits. Brennan picked up the save with 1.0 inning pitched and two strikeouts.

Day Five: Oneonta 0, Emory 11 (5 Innings)
Emory scored five runs in the first inning with a two-run triple, an RBI double, and two RBI singles. The Eagles made it 8-0 on a two-run double and a groundout in the top of the third. Emory scored their final three runs in the fifth inning off a double by Sonia Klein.

Serena, Cardello, and Silliman recorded a hit for Oneonta.

Torgersen was tagged with the loss as she pitched 0.2 innings, struck out one and allowed four runs on four hits. Brennan pitched 1.2 innings, struck out one, and allowed four runs on five hits. Scalere pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, and freshman Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) pitched 1.0 inning and allowed three runs on three hits.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Friday, March 21, for their home opening doubleheader against Skidmore starting at 2 pm.
