ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team returned home for a 4-3 win over Marywood on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 7-5 overall, while the Pacers fall to 5-6.
Senior pitcher Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out two batters to complete a 1-2-3 first inning. Oneonta then struck on the bottom of the frame, with junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scoring on a single against senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem). Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a double to advance Foglia to third. Foglia reached home following a ground out by senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) to take a 2-0 lead.
Marywood loaded the bases in the second inning before senior James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) struck out a batter, and the final out came from a flyout to senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor).
Junior Eric Korzeniewski (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) struck out two Pacers in the third, and sophomore Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) pitched a three-up, three-down inning in the fourth.
Oneonta tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Dwyer singled, he stole second and third. Senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) brought Dwyer home on a triple to right field, and an RBI sacrifice bunt from senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) made it 4-0.
Marywood found some offense in the seventh, with Joel Ayers singling in a run and Christian Michak scoring on a wild pitch.
The Pacers added one more in the ninth when Ayers singled in a run from Michak.
Cronin finished 2-for-4 with two doubles. Hutter went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Ayers was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Michak added a hit and two runs.
Oneonta went to the dugout and used a different pitcher for each inning. The Red Dragons totaled nine strikeouts with six hits. Roper (2-1) recorded the win, and junior Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) grabbed the save.
Brett Kugler went 3.2 innings with seven hits, two runs, and two strikeouts.
Oneonta opens SUNYAC play next when it hosts Plattsburgh in a three-game series starting on Fri. Mar. 21 at 3 p.m.
