ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team used a 12-run sixth inning to power past Plattsburgh 19-0 to open SUNYAC play on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals fall to 5-6 and 0-1 in the conference.
Oneonta opened the first inning with senior Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) striking out three Plattsburgh batters. In the bottom of the frame, junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) led off with a single to center field and reached second on a wild pitch. Jacoby then scored on a single from freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) to take a 1-0 lead.
The Red Dragons built their lead to 3-0 in the second, with senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) doubling in runs from junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) and senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown).
Oneonta continued to roll in the third. A Hutter sacrifice fly brought home a run from senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem), and another two-RBI double by Wurster pushed the Red Dragons ahead 6-0. A bases-loaded walk let Wurster score to take a seven-run lead.
Plattsburgh was held to two hits for the remainder of the game, and Oneonta loaded the bases early in the bottom of the sixth. Duffy hit a two-RBI single to take a 10-0 lead. The Red Dragons scored seven runs on walks and capped off the inning with a Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) sacrifice fly to make it 19-0. Roper sealed the game in the seventh inning by striking out two batters.
