AUBURNDALE, FL—The Oneonta baseball team swept Central in Tuesday morning's doubleheader at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Red Dragons won the first game 4-1 and the second game 11-6. Oneonta moves to 4-3 overall, while Central goes to 4-3.
Oneonta scored first in the bottom of the second of game one. Senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) led off with a walk. Junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) followed with an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Wyatt Braun (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) kept the Dutch scoreless in four innings with five strikeouts, but Central finally broke through in the fifth. Brayden Sawyer singled in a run to tie 1-1.
The Red Dragons added three runs in the sixth, with senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) leading off with a double. Gilkey reached third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River). Senior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled home Gilkey, and Hutter tripled to add a run from Foglia. Hutter scored on a wild pitch to take the 4-1 win.
Braun went 5.0 innings with four hits, five strikeouts, and one run. Junior Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) (1-0) went 2.0 innings with one strikeout.
Brayden Sawyer pitched 6.0 innings with seven hits and six strikeouts.
Oneonta took a 7-1 lead in the third inning of game two. Gilkey and Dwyer hit doubles to bring in a pair of runs. Then, with two runners on base, Duffy hit his first career home run to cap off a six-run inning.
Central responded in the fourth when Jackson Torbit hit a grand slam to cut the Oneonta lead to 7-6. In the top of the sixth, Oneonta loaded the bases. Freshman Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) reached home on a Gilkey sacrifice bunt, and Dwyer singled home junior Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) to make it 9-6. A two-RBI single from Foglia made it 11-6. Sophomore Jake Quigley (Harrison, NY/Harrison) pitched the final two innings, striking out two batters and not allowing a run or a hit.
Foglia went 3-for-3 with three RBO and one run, while Gilkey and Dwyer each recorded two hits. Junior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) tallied three runs.
Oneonta next plays Keystone on Wed. Mar. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
