ONEONTA, N.Y. - On a snowy day atop the hill, the Oneonta men's lacrosse fell 8-4 to Vassar on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 0-2, while the Brewers move to 2-0.
Both sides turned the ball over and struggled to manage clean shots in the first half. Vassar goalkeeper Drew Quinn saved shots from Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) and Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park). The Brewers struck first at 6:35 when John Malone found the back of the net to lead 1-0 heading into the second quarter. Â

The Red Dragons got on the board a minute later when Kreig scored on an Anthony Munro (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) assist. Vassar managed the slippery conditions and added two more to lead 5-1 at halftime.
Anderson Eads netted a goal 30 seconds into the second half, and the Red Dragons were held scoreless until 5:24. Hnis netted a man-up goal off a pass from Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling). O'Neil scored on the following Oneonta possession to cut the lead to 6-3.
Vassar responded with a Jack Rufa goal at 3:04, but O'Neil scored after the ensuing faceoff to make it 7-4.
Vassar tacked on one more goal in the fourth and shut out Oneonta to grab its second win of the season.
O'Neil scored two goals with one assist, while Krieg added a goal and an assist. Hnis had a goal, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) went 10-for-14 on faceoffs.
