Oneonta Comeback Falls Short Against UChicago

MEMPHIS, TN - The Oneonta baseball team mustered five runs in the eighth inning but fell short against UChicago 11-6 on Sunday morning. The Red Dragons fall to 0-2 overall, while the Maroons move to 6-0.

Oneonta recorded two hits at the bottom of the first, with senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) singling to third. He stole second but was tagged out at home following a single from junior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) to end the inning.

Senior pitcher James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) struck out the lead-off batter in the top of the second, and two Maroons' lineouts kept the game scoreless.

The Red Dragons struggled to get their offense rolling, and neither side scored through five innings. Junior Antonio Hicks (Rexford, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) came in to pitch at the top of the fifth and struck out two Chicago batters to record a 1-2-3 inning.

The Maroons heated up in the top of the sixth with the first two batters walked. Nathan Bae singled down the right-field line to bring a runner home. Jack Sharp doubled to right field to allow two more runners to score, and an Oneonta fielding error brought two more in to make it 5-0. Chicago scored two more runs to make it 7-0.

Oneonta got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when senior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) reached third on a wild pitch. Freshman Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Hutter home to make it 7-1.

Chicago added three more runs in the eighth to take a 10-1 lead. At the bottom of the frame, Oneonta got two on base, following a Travis Gfrerer (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) double and a Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) single. Gfrerer scored on a throwing error. The Red Dragons loaded the bases, and Jacoby walked home to make it 10-3. Freshman Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) doubled home two runners, and a final run from Hutter cut the lead to 10-6.

The Maroons added one run in the ninth, and Oneonta went 1-2-3 in the final inning.

Oneonta wraps up the Tennessee trip on Mon. Feb. 24 against Spalding (Ky.) at 10 a.m. (CT).
