MEMPHIS, TN - The Oneonta baseball team fell 18-5 to hot-hitting Spalding on Monday morning to conclude the Red Dragons' three-game trip. The Eagles move to 1-2 overall, while the Red Dragons fall to 0-3.
Oneonta went down quick outs in the top of the first before senior Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) knocked a home run down the left-center field to give Oneonta a 1-0 lead.
That proved to be the Red Dragons only lead as Spalding responded with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame. Ethan Tuttle led off with a home run to center field, and the Eagles loaded the bases afterward. Whitt Callahan doubled to bring home two runs. Another pair of base hits pushed Spalding ahead 6-1.
Oneonta went 1-2-3 in the second, and the Eagles continued to roll their next at-bat. Evan Fisher homered to center field to make it 8-1, and a Hunter Strong double pushed the lead to double digits.
The Red Dragons found some offense in the top of the third, with senior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) hitting a two-RBI double to left field. Dwyer stole second and third and reached home on an error to cut the lead to 12-4.
Freshman Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) struck out two Eagles in the third, but home runs from Strong and Jacob Spanyer made it 17-4. Oneonta added one run in the seventh from a Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) home run before the game was called.
Oneonta returns north for their home opener doubleheader against Keuka on Sat. Mar. 1 at 11 a.m.
