Red Dragons Tame Bears in SUNYAC Sweep

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team swept its weekend conference series with a 3-0 victory over Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons won 25-20, 25-16, and 25-14 to move to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC. The Bears fall to 8-12 and 1-4 in the conference.

Oneonta started slow in the first set with Potsdam taking an 8-5 lead following a kill from Emily Prest. Freshman Lily Pugliese (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) answered with back-to-back kills to cut the lead to one, and then a kill from senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) made it 9-8. Potsdam's Noelle Redeye knocked in a kill to take a two-point lead before Oneonta went on a 3-0 run with a kill by junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and another two from McCabe to take an 11-10 lead. The Bears went on a 5-1 span to retake the lead. Oneonta answered with a 5-0 run with kills from sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville), senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia), and McCabe to go ahead 17-15. Potsdam tied 20-20, but the Red Dragons closed out with five unanswered points to take the first set.

A block from Morretta and Kendrick capped off a 3-0 run to give Oneonta a 5-4 lead in the second set. Potsdam cut the lead to 10-9 before freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) snuck in a kill to start a 5-0 Oneonta run. Potsdam took the following point, but a 6-0 Red Dragons' span with two kills from Morretta pushed the lead to 21-10. The Bears used a 5-0 run to pull within six, but Oneonta took the final three points.

Oneonta used an 8-0 run in the third with four Kendrick kills to take an 11-4 lead in the third. Potsdam pulled within four, but the Red Dragons always had an answer. Another 7-0 span made it 23-12, and a final kill from Kendrick sealed the victory.

Kendrick led the team with ten kills, added two blocks, and nine digs. McCabe tallied eight kills and two aces, while Morretta had six kills and four blocks. Senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) recorded three aces and 11 digs. Pertchik made 28 assists.
