POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team defeated Potsdam on the road, 58-48, Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC play. Senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) finished with the game-high 15 points and four rebounds, and junior
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) recorded 12 points, seven boards, and four assists. The Red Dragons improved to 7-10 on the season, 4-6 in the SUNYAC, and the Bears dropped to 6-10 overall, and 2-7 in conference play.
The victory was head coach
Daphne Thompson's 500th career win. She is already Oneonta's all-time winningest basketball coach as she is currently in her 18th season with the women's basketball program and has totaled 277 wins with the Red Dragons for a .621 win percentage.
Zuntag scored the team's first six points against the Bears and sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) split a pair at the free throw line to go up 7-4 at 4:53. DaeLynn Alcock made two at the line to pull Potsdam within two, then Oneonta ended the quarter with a 7-0 stretch for a 17-8 lead. Freshman
Nai Torres (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) and senior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) both found the basket in the paint, and senior
Alana Batson (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) knocked down a three-pointer from the wing in the final seconds.
Sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) scored six points while Schwarzbeck made a layup to put the Red Dragons ahead 25-12 with 6:23 to go in the half, however the Bears scored 10 unanswered points to turn it into a three-point game. Senior
Molly Coyne (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) found Zuntag driving towards the rim for the last bucket of the half and a 27-22 lead.
Schwarzbeck drained a triple from the wing off a pass from Desrats to start the third quarter, then Potsdam went on an 8-2 stretch to pull within two, 32-30, at 4:02. Oneonta answered with eight unanswered points to end the quarter up 40-30. Zuntag hit a midrange jumper while Schwarzbeck and Torres each drained a three-pointer for the 10-point lead.
The Red Dragon run continued into the fourth with a trey from Desrats and a layup from Schwarzbeck to go ahead 45-30 with 8:06 to play. The Bears cut the deficit to six points until senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) drilled a corner three for a 52-43 lead with 1:34 left. Brown, Young, and Schwarzbeck each knocked down a pair of free throws to hold onto the win.
Torres finished with nine points off the bench, Young had eight points and six boards, and Coyne had the game-high 10 rebounds with three assists. Potsdam had three players score double figures, Alcock led with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Red Dragons shot 34.4 percent from the floor and had a 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers, while the Bears shot 39.5 percent from the field and had a 37-34 rebounding advantage. From three-point range, Oneonta shot 37.5 percent (6-16) and Potsdam went 0-for-3.
Oneonta is back in action on Tuesday, January 28, for a SUNYAC game against Canton at 5:30 pm in Dewar Arena.
