ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team fell into an early deficit and were defeated by Oswego, 59-43, Tuesday evening in Dewar Arena. Senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) had the team-high nine points with four rebounds, and junior
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) finished with eight points and two steals. The Red Dragons moved to 6-9 on the season, 3-5 in SUNYAC play, and the Lakers improved to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Oswego got out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter. Senior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) scored the first basket for Oneonta then freshman
Kendall Mack (Cortland, NY/Cortland) hit a three-pointer to make 8-5, however Oswego closed out the quarter with an 8-0 run.
The Red Dragons made it 18-10 when Schwarzbeck knocked down two at the free throw line with 7:39 to play in the second, but the Lakers scored on their next possession and held onto a double-digit advantage for the rest of the half. Oswego built their lead up to 17 until junior
Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central High School) scored one from the line and Schwarzbeck drained a triple to head into halftime down 33-20.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter as the Lakers held onto a 12-point lead heading into the fourth. Sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) converted a pair at the line to make it a 10-point game, but Julia Logana hit a jumper at the end of the third to put Oswego up 43-31. The Lakers increased their lead to 21 with 1:34 to go, then freshmen
Nai Torres (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) drilled a three-pointer and freshman
Leela Guobadia (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) made a couple of free throws for the final score.
Sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) finished with six points and four rebounds, and Desrats had four points, four boards, and five assists. Four Lakers players scored in double figures, Shania Iglesias led with 15 points and Giavanna White-Principio finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Oswego shot 44.9 percent from the floor and had a 39-31 rebounding advantage, while Oneonta shot 20.6 percent from the field.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Friday, January 24, in Plattsburgh for a SUNYAC game against the Cardinals at 5:30 pm.
