ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team built a 24-point lead by halftime and cruised to a 66-38 SUNYAC win over Morrisville, Friday evening in Dewar Arena. Senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) shot 7-for-12 from the floor and finished with the game-high 16 points and six rebounds. Sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) recorded nine points, eight rebounds, and seven assists as the Red Dragons improved to 6-7 overall, 3-3 in the SUNYAC, and the Mustangs dropped to 4-9 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
Oneonta started the contest off with an 11-0 run through the first four minutes of play. Junior
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) and sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) each knocked down a trey during the stretch, Desrats converted an and-one, and Zuntag scored down low for the early double-digit advantage. Schwarzbeck drained her second triple of the game then Zuntag owned the paint and recorded the Red Dragons' final six points of the quarter to go up 22-10.
Hannah Bonczkowski hit a three-pointer for Morrisville at the start of the second quarter to make it a nine-point game, however Oneonta scored 11 unanswered points to go ahead 33-13 at 5:43. The Red Dragons looked to Desrats, Young, and senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) for the team's final points of the half and went into the break with a 42-18 lead.
Oneonta kept a 20-point advantage throughout the third quarter and went into the fourth ahead 55-28. The Mustangs started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 stretch to make it a 55-37 deficit, but the Red Dragons closed out the game with an 11-1 run. Seniors
Alana Batson (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Molly Coyne (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) each drilled a three-pointer during the run, Coyne then hit a midrange jumper, and freshman
Kendall Mack (Cortland, NY/Cortland) capped off the game with a triple from the wing.
Young recorded 12 points, with a pair of three-pointers, and eight rebounds, and Schwarzbeck went 3-for-8 from deep to finish with 11 points and seven boards. Anyssia Ingersoll led Morrisville with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Red Dragons shot 36.1 percent from the floor, held a 52-29 rebounding margin, and finished with 18 second chance points to Morrisville's one. The Mustangs were held to 26.9 percent from the field.
Oneonta is back in action Saturday, January 17, for the Battle of the Red Dragons against Cortland at 2 pm in Dewar Arena.
