Red Dragons Take Down Broncos in Four Sets

DELHI, N.Y. - Freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) recorded a match-high 14 kills as the Oneonta women's volleyball defeated Delhi 3-1. The Red Dragons took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-12 before falling 25-21 in the third. Oneonta wrapped up in the fourth with a 25-20 victory.

Delhi took an 11-6 lead in the first before a Broncos error, and an ace from sophomore Keria Welsh cut the lead to three. Oneonta rattled off a 6-0 run with three consecutive kills from Law and two aces by sophomore Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) to take a 14-12 advantage. Delhi fought back to tie 20-20. Oneonta scored the following four points with two more Law kills. The Red Dragons took the set off a bad set from the Broncos.

Law sent in another two kills to push Oneonta ahead 15-9, and a kill by junior Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) made it a seven-point set. The Broncos were held to 12 points, and two straight Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) aces gave Oneonta the set victory.

Oneonta fell in a closely matched third set. At 17-17, the Brocnos' Michaella DeCapua sent in three consecutive aces to take a four-point lead. The Red Dragons pulled within two before the Broncos took the final two points.

Oneonta built up to a 10-3 lead following a Welsh kill. Law and junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) tacked on kills to make it 17-9. Delhi cut the lead to four before freshman Shea Landversicht (/) spurred a 3-0 run capped off with a Welsh ace. The Red Dragons won the match off a Law final kill.

Spano finished with ten kills on .353 hitting, while Welsh finished with five kills and two aces. Moller had 19 digs, three assists, and two aces. Freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/) dished out 29 assists and seven digs.

Oneonta will next compete at the Skidmore Invitational in September. 6-7. The Red Dragons first face Connecticut College on Friday at 7 p.m.
