POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) netted her second goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Oneonta women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Vassar on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 0-4-1, while the Brewers move to 4-0-2.
In the 6th minute, Oneonta junior Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) struck a low shot that Vassar goalkeeper JD Reigrut saved. A minute later, Riley McGrath shot and hit the left Oneonta post, but the game remained scoreless. Junior goalie Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) stopped a shot from Lucy Hart in the 11th minute, and then Grace Romano shot high at 18:51.
Meehan saved three straight shots in the 27th minute to keep the Brewers off the board, and the Red Dragons countered with an on-goal attempt from sophomore Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) that Reigrut knocked out of bounds. Vassar fired twice at the Oneonta goal before halftime, but Meehan made the saves again.
Vassar scored early in the second half when Liv Ivie crossed the ball to an open Gianna Panarelli in front of the net to make it 1-0 at 51:52. The Brewers kept up the pressure with a pair of back-to-back shots from Ivie. Oneonta fouled a Vassar forward in the penalty box in the 64th minute. Alice Crowley connected with the top corner penalty kick goal to push the lead to 2-0.
The Vassar defense contained Oneonta until the 76th minute when freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) passed to Ring to get the Red Dragons on the board. Oneonta had a near goal at 81:44 following a corner kick when Kealey shot the ball high, but Laura Shea was there for the stop. Vassar kept the offense by taking four shots in the final two minutes, but Meehan had two saves in the end.
Vassar out-shot Oneonta 31-6 and held a 6-4 corner kick advantage. Meehan finished with ten saves, while Reigrut had two.
Oneonta next plays at Trinity on Sun. Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.
