BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team dropped both games in Friday's doubleheader at Brockport. The Red Dragons fell 4-3 in the first game and 7-3 in the nightcap.
Game One - Brockport 4, Oneonta 3
With Oneonta leading 3-1, Brockport brought in three eighth-inning runs to complete the comeback win in the opening game.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Cole Traudt singled home Josh Indek to make it 1-0.
After scoreless innings, Oneonta scored in the fourth inning. The Red Dragons went down one out before junior Ethan Duda (Latham, NY/The Albany Academies) hit a home run to tie. Neither side would score, and in the fifth inning, senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) struck out a batter, and sophomore Joseph Scarfone (Wappingers Falls, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) struck out another to keep it 1-1.
Oneonta brought two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) grounded out to third base, but sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) reached home. Junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) followed with an RBI double to allow freshman Sean Clinton (New York, NY/Clarkstown South) to score.
Brockport went down two outs in the bottom of the eighth and loaded the bases right after. Indek hit a three-RBI single to take a 4-3 lead before the Red Dragons escaped the inning.
Oneonta loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but the final two batters struck out to end the game.
Liquori pitched 4.1 innings with five strikeouts, while Scarfone finished with three strikeouts.
Justin DelVecchio went 4.2 innings and struck out six batters. Angelo Agro (1-0) pitched the final 2.0 innings and struck out four Oneonta batters.
Game Two - Brockport 7, Oneonta 2
The Golden Eagles brought in two runs in the second inning. Kyle Blake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Nick Mahar scored on an error to make it 2-0. Brockport added four runs in the third innings. David Belsito hit a bunt single to bring in a run, and then Traudt scored to make it 4-0. A Blake double added two more runs before senior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) struck out the final batter.
Oneonta struggled to hit in the following two innings, got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Clinton led off with a double and reached third on Jachens single. Gilkey singled home Clinton to cut the lead to 6-1, and Jachens scored on a third baseman error. Gilkey reached home after junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) popped up to center field to make it 6-3.
Brockport extended its lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Frank Vanzillotta doubled home Indek.
