BROCKPORT, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team dropped a 16-3 decision to Brockport on Saturday afternoon to close the regular season. Oneonta finishes the season at 15-23 overall and 4-14 in the SUNYAC. Brockport wraps up the year 22-16 and 9-9 in the conference.
Brockport's Ryan Peters struck out three Oneonta batters to open the first inning. The Red Dragons kept the Golden Eagles scoreless until the bottom of the third. Brockport loaded the bases, and Brian Tietjen hit a two-RBI single to make it 2-0. Chris Martin followed with a single to bring Zach Eldred home to take a three-run lead.Â
Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) led off with a triple in the fourth, scoring when senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) grounded out to third to cut the lead to 3-1. Pitcher Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out three straight batters in the bottom of the frame, but the Golden Eagles added five runs in the fifth inning. A Martin triple brought in two runs, and Logan Wing hit an RBI single to make it 7-1. The Golden Eagles added one more run before the final out to take a seven-run lead.
Brockport built to a 10-1 lead in the sixth before Oneonta scored again in the top of the seventh. Senior Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) singled home senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley). Bandura reached home on a Tom Mazany (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley / Slate Hill) ground out to short stop.Â
The game ended in the bottom of the eighth with Kyle Blake hitting a grand slam to secure the mercy rule win.Â
Mazany went 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Kaseta, Turner, Bandura, and Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) tacked on a hit.Â
Indek was 2-for-3 with two runs, while Tietjen finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.Â
