GOWANDA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team fell to Fredonia 8-7 and 7-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 10-14 overall and 2-7 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils move to 7-12 and 3-6 in the conference.Â
Game 1 - Oneonta 7, Fredonia 8
Fredonia scored in the bottom of the first when Brady Ventura scored on an error. The score stayed 1-0, and junior Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out two Blue Devil batters in the bottom of the second.Â
Fredonia built up to a 3-0 lead in the third, with Garrett Stuckey reaching home on a fielder's choice. Tucker Schwab followed with an RBI single to bring Ventura home.Â
Two scoreless innings followed until the top of the fifth. Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) reached first after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) followed with a single to put runners on first and second, and sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) hit a triple to bring in two runs.Â
Roper struck out another pair of batters in the sixth inning to limit the Blue Devils' offense.Â
Junior Logan singled in two runs in the top of the seventh, and a Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) two-RBI double put Oneonta ahead 6-3.Â
Fredonia answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to retake a 7-6 lead.Â
The game ended in the ninth inning, and Oneonta tied 7-7 when Dwyer stole home. Fredonia won in the bottom of the ninth when Schwab hit a single to bring Ventura home.Â
Roper (1-4) pitched 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts, while Nathan O'Brochta (2-0) struck out five batters.
Game 2 - Oneonta 4, Fredonia 7
The Red Dragons started strong, with Dwyer hitting a two-RBI home run in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Fredonia responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 3-2. The Blue Devils scored again in the third inning when Christian Pagano hit a two-run home run to push the score to 5-2.Â
Freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) singled home Liquori, and Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) scored on a balk to cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the fourth.
Neither side scored until the bottom of the sixth when Alex Gannon doubled in a run. Another run in the seventh sealed the 7-4 win over the Red Dragons.Â
Oneonta next plays at Cobleskill on Wed. Apr. 10 at 4 p.m.
