COBLESKILL, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team picked up a 5-2 win over Cobleskill in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Red Dragons move to 11-14 overall, while the Fighting Tigers fall to 6-16.
After a scoreless first inning, Oneonta tacked on the first run in the top of the second. Sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) led off with a walk and stole second and third. Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) grounded out to third base, but Dwyer reached home to make it 1-0.Â
In the bottom of the frame, Cobleskill's first two batters grounded out to freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central), and junior pitcher James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) struck out another to keep the Fighting Tigers off the board. Torres struck out another batter in the third to hold the narrow lead.Â
Cobleskill tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jesus Sarda hit a double to center field to bring home Chris Champlin. Sophomore Joseph Scarfone (Wappingers Falls, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) settled in and struck out the following two Fighting Tigers.Â
After two scoreless innings, junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled home Jachens in the sixth to make it 2-1. Oneonta built its lead to three runs in the seventh, with Jachens hitting a sacrifice fly, allowing Hutter to score. Sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) singled in Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) to put the Red Dragons up 4-1.Â
Cobleskill cut into the Oneonta lead in the eighth inning when Stephen Tejada stole home. Senior Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) came in to pitch and struck out the final Cobleskill batter to end the inning.Â
Oneonta added a run following a Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-2 in the ninth inning. The Red Dragons did not allow a single hit in the bottom of the frame, and Rosenberger struck out another Cobleskill batter to earn the save.Â
Torres pitched 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and two hits. Scarfone (2-2) went 2.0 innings and struck out two batters.Â
Jerry Kirchstetter went 5.0 innings with six strikeouts and one run.Â
Oneonta next hosts New Paltz on Fri. Apr. 12 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
