ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team split its SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons (12-5, 3-8 SUNYAC) took the first game 6-3 before falling to the Hawks(15-10, 4-4 SUNYAC) 6-2 in the second.
Game One - Oneonta 6, New Paltz 3
Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) struck out two New Paltz batters to start the first inning, and the Red Dragons went down two outs in the bottom of the frame. Junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) doubled to left field and reached home on a short-stop error. Sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) stole third to break the single-season record with 28 on the year and scored when the Hawk's catcher overthrew the ball to third base.Â
Liquori struck out another two batters in the second inning, but the Hawks tied in the third. Tommy Kreider doubled in a run, and Anthony Pericolosi doubled in another to make it 2-2.Â
After a scoreless fourth inning, Oneonta scored when senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) hit a sacrifice bunt to bring junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) home. The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 4-2 in the sixth when Dwyer's sacrifice fly brought home junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor).Â
Wurster knocked a sacrifice fly to right field in the seventh to score a run from Hutter and make it 5-2.Â
Oneonta took a four-run lead in the eighth inning when Foglia singled in sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown).Â
New Paltz attempted the comeback in the top of the ninth and scored following a Kreider sacrifice fly to center field. Graduate student pitcher Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) struck out the final Hawks' batter to earn the save.
Liquori (4-2) pitched 6.0 innings with four strikeouts, and graduate student pitcher Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.Â
Xavier Zykoff (3-1) pitched 7.1 innings and struck out eight batters.Â
Game Two - Oneonta 2, New Paltz 6
Oneonta started by scoring two runs in the first inning of game two. Foglia doubled in Gilkey, and Foglia made it 2-0 by scoring on a short-stop error. New Paltz responded in the third inning when Michael Ascanio singled in Joe Richetti to make it 2-1. The Hawks evened the score in the fifth when Kreider used a sacrifice fly to bring Fabien Apicella home. New Paltz took the lead in the top of the seventh when Justin Harvey scored following an Oneonta error to make it 3-2.Â
New Paltz continued to chip in runs in the eighth when Dillon Ristano singled home Pericolosi. An Apicella two-RBI single extended the Hawks' lead to 6-2.Â
Oneonta wraps up the three-game series against New Paltz on Sat. Apr. 13 at noon.
