ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team concluded the weekend with a 14-7 loss to New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta falls to 12-16 and 3-9 in the SUNYAC, while New Paltz moves to 15-10 and 5-4 in the conference.
New Paltz took a 3-0 lead at the top of the first inning. The Hawks used a bases-loaded walk to go up 1-0. Nick Harvey knocked a two-RBI single to center field to push the lead to three runs.Â
Oneonta went down two outs in the second inning but loaded the bases. Junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) walked to force sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) home to make it 3-1.Â
Neither side scored until the Hawks unloaded seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. Michael Boccarossa doubled in a pair of runners to make it 5-1, and Dillon Ristano hit a two-RBI single to left field to push the lead to six. Singles from Justin Harvey and Fabien Apicella, and a short-stop error allowed the Hawks to take a 10-1 lead.Â
The Red Dragons worked to chip away at the Hawks' lead in the bottom of the fifth. Oneonta went down two outs, and junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) and Foglia reached second and third. Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled in the both of them to make it 10-3.Â
New Paltz extended its lead to 14-3 in the sixth inning, with Joe Richetti capping it off with a two-RBI single to center field.Â
Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) hit a three-RBI home run in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 14-6, and a loaded bases walk made it a seven-run game.Â
Sophomore Joseph Scarfone (Wappingers Falls, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) struck out two Hawks in the seventh and another in the eighth, but the Red Dragons could not add to the score.Â
Robert Gregory (3-0) went 4.2 innings with four strikeouts, and Matt Sarni picked up the save pitching 3.2 innings with three strikeouts.Â
Oneonta next plays Utica at home in non-conference action on Wed. Apr. 17 at 4 p.m.
