ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team defeated Utica 12-5 on Wednesday as nine Red Dragons recorded a hit. Oneonta moves to 13-16 overall, while Utica falls to 9-18.Â
The Pioneers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Josh Duval hit a two-RBI single to center field. Oneonta responded at the bottom of the frame when junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) scored on a catcher error, which made it 2-1.Â
After a scoreless second inning, pitcher Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) struck out two Pioneers in the top of the third. Oneonta poured out five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Gilkey led off with a single to center field and reached second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) doubled home Gilkey to tie and stole third. Dwyer reached home when junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) grounded out to second base. Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) followed with a double down the left-field line. Freshman Sean Clinton (New York, NY/Clarkstown South) hit a double to left field to bring sophomore Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) and Liquori home to push the lead to 6-2.Â
The Red Dragons added two more in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) reached home on a Liquori sacrifice fly, and Dwyer stole home to extend the lead to 8-2.Â
Oneonta added one run in the seventh inning. Clinton hit an RBI single to take a 9-2 lead. Utica answered in the top of the eighth behind a three-RBI inside the park home run from Tanner Warren to cut the lead to 9-5. The Red Dragons made it 12-5 when senior Franklin Dailla hit an RBI double, and Clinton hit an RBI single to left field. Graduate student pitcher Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) struck out a batter in the ninth, and Oneonta capped the inning off with a double play.Â
Clinton went 3-for-5 with four RBI, while senior Kaseta was 2-for-3 with a run. Gilkey batted 2-for-3 with two runs.
Warren was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run.Â
Senior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) went 2.0 innings with three strikeouts, and Rooney (1-1) pitched 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.Â
Oneonta next travels to face Plattsburgh on Fri. Apr. 19 at 3 p.m.Â
