ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â With the game tied in extra innings, sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) hit a home run in the top of the 11th inning to propel the Oneonta baseball team 7-6 past Plattsburgh on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 14-16 overall and 4-9 in the SUNYAC. The Cardinals fall to 17-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference.Â
Oneonta struck first, getting on the board with sophomore Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) singling home junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) to take a 1-0 lead. Plattsburgh responded at the bottom of the frame, with Aidan Diltz hitting an RBI single to the right-center to tie. The Cardinals took the lead when Austin Caldwell singled home a runner.Â
Senior Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) brought the score to 2-2 following an RBI single to the left side in the top of the third, but the Cardinals answered again. A Diltz home run pushed Plattsburgh ahead 4-2.Â
The Cardinals built their lead to three runs in the fourth when Daniel Novelli singled home Alex Kornblau.Â
Oneonta kept the game within reach when junior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Duffy home to make it 5-3 in the fifth inning. Senior pitcher Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) struck out two batters in the bottom of the inning to keep the inning scoreless.Â
The Red Dragons took a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth. After going down two outs, Oneonta put runners on second and third. Duffy doubled to left center to bring Hutter and Dwyer home. Padilla followed with an RBI single to take the lead.Â
Oneonta held Plattsburgh scoreless through the next three innings until the Cardinals tied in the ninth with an RBI single. Another two scoreless innings followed until the top of the ninth. The lead-off batter struck out, and Dwyer came up to bat. He knocked a home run to left-center field to put the Red Dragons up 7-6. The Cardinals had a final chance, and Kornblau reached second on a sacrifice bunt. He reached third when Diltz grounded out to Padilla at first base. A final groundout to Dwyer at third ended the game.Â
Duffy batted 3-for-7 with three RBI and one run, while Liquori was 2-for-4 with two runs and three walks. Padilla added two hits and two RBI.Â
Kornblau batted 3-for-6 with two runs. Diltz added three hits, three RBI, and one run.Â
Liquori went 5.0 innings with four strikeouts, while Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) (1-1) went 2.1 with three strikeouts. Sophomore Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) earned the save.Â
