PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team fell to Plattsburgh in a pair of games on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons lost 8-7 in extra innings in the first game and then dropped 10-1 in the second. Oneonta moves to 14-18 overall and 4-11 in the SUNYAC, while Plattsburgh goes to 19-10 overall and 7-5 in the conference.Â
Game One - Plattsburgh 8, Oneonta 7
The Red Dragons took a 2-0 in the first inning with sophomore Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) hitting a two-RBI single to left-center. Plattsburgh tacked on a run in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 2-1.Â
Oneonta built up to a 6-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) singled home runs from Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) and LuKas Jachens. Duffy hit a single to center field to add scores from Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) and Hutter.
The Cardinals scored on an error to cut the lead to 6-2, and neither side scored until the bottom of the fifth inning. Ben Catrambone singled to center field to bring in a run from Austin Caldwell. Jack Defayette reached home on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4.
Plattsburgh would tie in the sixth inning with RBI singles from Daniel Noveilli and Caldwell.  Â
Another two scoreless innings followed before Oneonta retook the lead in the top of the eighth. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Hutter home to make it 8-7. The Cardinals answered with Diltz singling home a run to tie in the bottom of the eighth to force extra innings.Â
Plattsburgh held Oneonta without a hit in extra innings, and in the bottom of the 11th, Andrew Veit hit the game-winning single to take the win. Â
Game Two - Plattsburgh 10, Oneonta 1
The Cardinals poured in five runs in the first inning to jump to a 5-0 lead. DeFayette doubled to left field to bring in two runs, and another double from Adam Wein brought DeFayette home.
Oneonta struggled on offense and were held without a run until the fourth inning. Freshman Sean Clinton (New York, NY/Clarkstown South) singled in a run from Liquori to cut the lead to 5-1.Â
The offenses slowed until the sixth inning when the Cardinals added three more runs. Plattsburgh pushed the lead to nine runs in the seventh, with Alex Kornblau hitting a two-RBI triple to right-center field. Oneonta could not muster a comeback in the final innings and were held without a run.Â
Oneonta next hosts Elmira on Tue. Apr. 23 at 4 p.m.
