ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â After trailing 4-0 in the first inning, the Oneonta baseball team shut out Elmira for an eventual 6-4 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 15-18 overall, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 11-15.Â
Elmira went down two outs to start the first inning. Mateo Salvati singled in a run, and Brady Buttice followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. A pair of RBI singles from Xander Canfield and Jacob Parker brought the lead to four before Logan Kaufman (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) struck out the final batter.
Junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) led off with a single to right field and reached third on a fielder's choice. Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Gilkey home and make it 4-1.Â
Junior James Torres (North Salem, NY/North Salem) came in to pitch in the second inning and opened with two strikeouts. Oneonta tied in the bottom of the frame with junior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) singling to right-center field. Freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) walked, and a two-RBI single from Gilkey brought the two home to make it a one-run game. Hutter doubled down the left-field line to tie at 4-4.Â
Torres struck out another batter in the third, but the game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) doubled to left, and Bonilla walked. Junior Benjamin Curcio (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) used a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Gilkey singled home, and sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) used a sacrifice fly to add a run from Bonilla.Â
Elmira put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth. Senior Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) struck out two straight Soaring Eagles to pick up the save and give the Red Dragons the win.Â
Gilkey finished the day batting 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, while Dwyer, Hutter, Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.), and Bonilla had two hits.  Â
Torres (1-0) went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts.
Oneonta continues the season with a doubleheader against St. John Fisher on Sat. Apr. 27 at noon.Â
