Oneonta Falls to St. John Fisher on Senior Day

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team dropped two games to St. John Fisher on Saturday's senior day. The Cardinals won 3-2 in the first and 6-1 in the second. Oneonta moves to 15-20, while St. John Fisher goes to 18-16 overall.

Game One - Oneonta 2, St. John Fisher 3

The game opened with three scoreless innings, and graduate student pitcher Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) struck out three batters. 

Oneonta struck in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) led off with a double to center field. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) reached on an error that Duffy reached home on. Senior Tom Mazany (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley / Slate Hill) hit an RBI single to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead. 

Shea struck out another Cardinals batter in the top of the fifth to complete a 1-2-3 inning, but neither team scored until the seventh. 

St. John Fisher brought in two runs, with Benjamin Huckans doubling in a run. Huckans reached home on a third-baseman error to tie 2-2. 

Senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) pitched the eighth inning and struck out a batter to keep the game tied until the ninth.

The Cardinals scored on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the frame to go up 3-2. Senior Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) mustered a hit in the bottom of the ninth, but the Red Dragons did not score. 

Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) batted 3-for-4, while Kaseta was 2-for-4 with one run. Sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) was 2-for-3. 

James Murphy went 2-for-4 with two runs. 

Shea went 7.0 innings with four hits, five strikeouts, and two runs. 

Patrick McGuire went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and two runs. Tanner Frank (3-2) went 3.0 innings to get the win. 

Game Two - St. John Fisher 6, Oneonta 1

The Cardinals erupted for 12 hits while holding the Red Dragons to two in the second game. 

Junior Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out two Cardinals to start the first inning, but St. John Fisher took a 4-0 lead in the second. Jake Crantz tripled in a pair of runs, and an Andrew Roman home run gave the Cardinals the lead.

Oneonta got on the board in the bottom of the third. After sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) doubled and stole third, senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) singled him home to cut the lead to 4-1. 

The Cardinals added two more runs in the fifth, with Murphy hitting an RBI single to center field. Guccia followed with a double down the left-field line to make it 6-1. St. John Fisher held Oneonta without a hit down the stretch to grab the win. 

Before the game, Oneonta seniors Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College), Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy), Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers), Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland), Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers), Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush), Thomas Skoczek (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier), Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore), Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley), Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), Cole Rockwell (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), and Tom Mazany (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley / Slate Hill) were recognized. 

Oneonta wraps up the regular season with a SUNYAC series at Brockport on Fri. May 3 at 3 p.m.
