GOWANDA, N.Y. - Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) pitched a complete game with a career-high ten strikeouts on Saturday afternoon, helping Oneonta to a 6-1 win over Fredonia. Oneonta moves to 10-12 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC, while Fredonia falls to 5-12 and 1-5 in the conference.Â
After three scoreless innings, with Liquori striking out four Blue Devils' batters, the Red Dragons got on the board first in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) walked and stole second. He reached third when junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) grounded out. Liquori singled Jacoby home to make it 1-0. Â
Oneonta kept Fredonia without a hit in the bottom of the frame and added a second run in the fifth. Junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) led off with a single, and senior Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) followed with a single. Junior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled Gilkey home to push Oneonta up 2-0.Â
Fredonia scored in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Wojcik singled home Kyle Tedford, cutting the lead to 2-1.Â
Oneonta brought in two more runs in the seventh inning. After the first two Red Dragons struck out, Jacoby and sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) got on first and second. Hutter knocked a two-RBI triple to make it 4-1. Liquori followed up in the bottom of the inning with three straight strikeouts.Â
Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) led off with a double to right field in the eighth and was singled home by Padilla to make it 5-1. Dwyer scored on an error in the ninth inning to secure the win.Â
Liquori went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hutter had two RBI. Gilkey batted 2-for-3, and Padilla was 2-for-4.Â
The Blue Devils were held to four hits, and Wokcik led the team going 2-for-3.Â
Liquori (3-2) went 9.0 innings and struck out ten batters with no walks.
Joe Tobia (1-3) pitched 4.1 innings with four hits, two runs, and two strikeouts.Â
Oneonta plays Fredonia in a doubleheader on Sun. Apr. 7 at noon.Â
