QUEENS, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team defeated Baruch College, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at the USTA National Center. Sophomore
William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) won in doubles and singles play as the Red Dragons improved to 11-11 on the season and the Bearcats dropped to 10-5 overall.
Oneonta took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Schmid paired up with senior
August LePique (New York, NY/Columbia) on the No. 1 court and beat Liam Cooper and Juan Paredes, 8-4, to win five of their past seven as a team. Freshman
Zachary Blaakman (Penfield/Penfield High School) and
Nathaniel Inzerrilo (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) moved to 7-7 as a pair in their 8-2 win against Jordan Hernandez and Steven Margolis on the No. 3 court.
The Red Dragons continued to dominate the Bearcats and won four of the six singles matches. Schmid won by opponent retirement against Paredes on the No. 2 court, though he was already up a set and was leading 4-1 in the set two before the match was called. Freshmen
Chris Chippari (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C Ketcham) and
Brayden Stuart (Albertson, N.Y./Herricks HS / New Hyde Park) each recorded straight set wins with a first set bagel on the No. 3 and No. 4 singles courts, respectively. Chippari improved to 15-8 on the year with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over George Arteaga, and Stuart defeated Cooper, 6-0, 6-1 to go to 12-9 on the season. Sophomore
Braden Greenberg (Northport, N.Y./Northport) took the No. 6 court in a split set victory versus Margolis, to win three out of his last five matches. Greenberg dropped the first set before he secured set two and the tiebreaker for the match, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
Oneonta wraps up the season with a home match against Alfred on Sunday, April 28, at 1 pm.
