CLINTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team fell in their non-conference contest against Hamilton, 19-8, Tuesday evening. Freshman
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) finished with five goals and a ground ball while three players for Oneonta recorded a goal and an assist. The Red Dragons moved to 6-6 on the season and the Continentals improved to 7-6.
Hamilton jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period with three goals coming from Thomas Healy. The Continentals scored three more in the second period before junior
Vincent Tirino (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) netted the first goal for the Red Dragons at 7:38 to make it 7-1. Hamilton closed out the half with five goals from five different players to go ahead 12-1 at the break.
Each team scored three in the third period as Hamilton led 15-4 heading into the fourth. Hnis scored all three goals for the Red Dragons and had his second goal assisted by senior
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue). Three different Continentals scored in the quarter to maintain the 11-goal lead.
Oneonta recorded three straight in the fourth quarter to pull within 15-7 with 10:42 to play. Senior
Evan Kelly (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) found the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season, then assisted Hnis on his fourth goal of the game. Senior
Eric Nicholson (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored his 12th goal of the season at 10:42, but Hamilton scored back-to-back goals to go up 17-7 with 9:07 left. Junior
Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) won the next faceoff, collected the ground ball and passed the ball to Nicholson who dished it to Hnis for the Red Dragons final goal at 9:01, his 29th goal of the season. The Continentals closed out the game with two more goals for the 19-8 final.
Kelly, Nicholson, and Tirino all had a goal and an assist. Barikyan won 11 of 23 faceoffs and collected six ground balls. Senior
Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) started the first half and finished with five saves. Sophomore
Tyler Carroll (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) played 25:14 and had five saves, and freshman
Ben Thayer (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) went in for the final 4:46 and made one save.
Healy ended with five goals, Christian Byrne had one goal and three assists. Jack Fried started for the Continentals and made six saves, Ben Greco played the final 17:24 and made three stops.
Hamilton outshot Oneonta 50-28 and had a 45-30 advantage in ground balls.
Oneonta is back in action Saturday, April 20, for a SUNYAC contest at Cortland at 1 pm.
