NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team fell in both games of their SUNYAC doubleheader at New Paltz, Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped game one, 5-2, then came up short in game two, 2-1. Oneonta is now 8-14 on the season, 2-4 in the SUNYAC, while New Paltz improved to 20-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) went 3-for-3 with a home run in game two for her 16th career home run and became the program's career home run leader, surpassing Katie O'Gorman '17. Currently in the program's history, Serena is first in the career home runs (16), first in career slugging percentage (.660), fourth in batting average (.388), tied for fifth in doubles (32), and seventh in career RBI (89).
Game One: Oneonta 2, New Paltz 5
Senior
Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but New Paltz capitalized on a couple errors and recorded three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up, 3-1. Jaycee Filancia hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second then Kelsey O'Brien hit a one-run single in the sixth to go ahead 5-1.
The Red Dragons got the bases loaded in the seventh inning with one-out. Freshman
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) singled to right, senior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) reached on an infield error, and sophomore
Cailin Hall (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) poked a single out to centerfield. Senior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) scored pinch-runner senior
Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) on a grounder to pull them within three, however the other two base runners were left stranded as the Hawks recorded the final out on a pop up.
Haley finished 2-for-4 and scored a run. Senior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (1-6) pitched the complete game for Oneonta, allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits.
O'Brien ended 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice, Filancia was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lindsay Roman (9-3) went the full 7.0 innings for New Paltz, struck out two, and allowed two runs on six hits.
Game Two: Oneonta 1, New Paltz 2
The Hawks gained the lead in game two off an error in the bottom of the second. Serena blasted the record-breaking home run in the third inning to tie the game at one. New Paltz got two runners on in the fifth inning and gained the 2-1 lead off an infield error. Oneonta had a runner on second in the sixth and seventh innings but could not bring them home and New Paltz held onto game two.
Serena finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, and junior
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) went 2-for-2. Brown (3-5) pitched the complete game for the Red Dragons, struck out six, and allowed two unearned runs on two hits.
Sydney Waldon (10-1) went the distance for the Hawks, struck out one, and allowed one run on seven hits.
Oneonta is back in action Friday, April 19, for a doubleheader on the road against Plattsburgh starting at 3 pm.
