ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Oneonta baseball team to a 2-1 win over Cobleskill on Monday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 9-12 overall, and the Fighting Tigers fall to 3-15.Â
Oneonta battled Cobleskill in a pitcher's dual throughout seven scoreless innings. Sophomore Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) struck out two Fighting Tigers in the opening inning, and Andrew Jarkow responded by striking out a Red Dragon in the bottom of the frame.
Cobleskill's Stephen Tejada led off with a single in the second inning before Thorsland struck out another pair of batters. Four 1-2-3 innings followed until the bottom of the fourth when senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled to right field. Wurster stole second and reached third on a Jacoby sacrifice bunt. Wurster attempted to go home but was tagged out a home to keep the game locked 0-0.Â
Neither side could get the offense rolling until the top of the eighth when Logan Firment hit a triple to center field. Firment reached home on Zach Ducorsky's single to take a 1-0 lead.Â
Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) reached first on a short-stop error, and senior Cole Rockwell (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) came in to pinch run. Jacoby followed up with a two-RBI home run that bounced over the center field fence to put the Red Dragons up 2-1.Â
Senior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) struck out a Cobleskill batter at the top of the ninth, and a final ground-out to second base ended the game.Â
Thorsland went 5.0 innings with two hits and struck out eight batters. Roefaro (2-0) struck out four batters.
Jarkow pitched 5.0 innings with five strikeouts.Â
Oneonta next travels to play Fredonia on Fri. Apr. 5 at 3 p.m.
