HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team fell on the road at No. 17 Stevens Tech, 22-7, Saturday afternoon. Senior
Eric Nicholson (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) led the team with three goals and two assists, while sophomore
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) recorded two goals and an assist. The Red Dragons moved to 3-2 on the season and the Ducks improved to 4-1.
Nicholson tied the game at 11:55 with a quick no-look shot past his defender, then Stevens scored three straight for a 4-1 lead at 6:51. Freshman
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) scored on the right side of the attack zone off a pass from senior
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) at 5:29. O'Neil scored his first and Hnis recorded his second goal before the end of the first as the Ducks held a 6-4 lead.
The Red Dragons made it a one-goal game at 14:23 off a Nicholson goal, but Stevens countered and scored five unanswered to go up 11-5. O'Neil dished it to Nicholson for the score on a man-up opportunity at 4:23, yet the Ducks went into halftime ahead 14-6.
O'Neil netted the final goal for Oneonta at 5:11 in the third period off a pass from Nicholson.
Hnis finished with two goals and Krieg ended with two assists. Senior
Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) played 56:04 and saved 19 shots. Freshman
Ben Thayer (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) competed in his first collegiate game and played 3:56 midway through the third quarter and allowed three goals.
Matt Pergola had five goals and two assists for Stevens. Chris Kirschner had six goals and Jack Savarese recorded four goals. Kevin Holtby had eight saves in the first three periods and Jake Zeyher saved three shots in the final quarter.
The Ducks outshot the Red Dragons 73-32 and had a 41-37 advantage in ground balls.
Oneonta is back in action Wednesday, March 13, for a road game against Bridgewater at 4 pm in Bridgewater, Virginia.
