ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â After trailing 2-0 in the first inning, the Oneonta baseball team responded with six runs over the following three innings to eventually win 11-4 over Elmira on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 4-4 overall, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 4-5.Â
Elmira scored when Matteo Salvati singled in Brett Warden. Salvati reached home on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead. Senior pitcher Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) settled in and struck out the following better to end the frame.Â
Oneonta did not get anything moving on offense, but Roefaro struck out another two batters in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning, senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) doubled in runs from Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) and Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) to tie 2-2. Wurster scored on a wild pitch to take the lead, and sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) knocked a triple to right center to add a run from sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown).Â
Roefaro pitched well and struck out two more Soaring Eagles in the third.Â
Another Wurster double added a pair of runs to push Oneonta's lead to 6-2 in the third. Offenses slowed until the bottom of the sixth, with Dwyer singling in a Jacoby run to make it 7-2. Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) pitched the top of the seventh and struck out two Elmira batters. In the bottom of the frame, the Red Dragons added four runs on six hits. Sophomore Sean Clinton (New York, NY/Clarkstown South) scored on a passed ball, and Turner doubled in Bradley. A double from Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) brought the score to 10-2, and Dwyer doubled in a run to push the lead to nine.Â
Elmira tacked on two runs in the ninth, but Oneonta's lead was never in doubt.Â
Wurster finished with two doubles, one run, and four RBI. Dwyer went 3-for-5 with three RBI, and Turner was 2-for-3 with three runs and a RBI.Â
Roefaro went 4.0 innings with eight strikeouts, two hits, and two runs. Sophomore Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) pitched 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.Â
Oneonta heads to Florida for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, which starts with a doubleheader against Farmingdale State on Monday. Mar. 11 at 3 p.m.
