AUBURNDALE, FL -Â After a long journey to Florida, the Oneonta baseball team heated up with 21 hits in the 20-10 win over Farmingdale State to open the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Red Dragons have won five straight and moved to 5-4 overall, while the Rams fall to 2-4.Â
Oneonta took a 2-0 lead in the first when senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) singled in sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) and junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem). Farmingdale responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Wasserman stole home. Oneonta went down two quick outs in the second inning before senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled to shortstop. Junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) walked, and sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) singled in Wurster to make it 3-1. With two runners on base, Foglia knocked a home run to push the Red Dragons ahead 6-1. Oneonta added one more run, with Dwyer reaching home on a Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) single.Â
The Rams answered with four runs in the bottom of the second. Wasserman doubled to bring Lambert home, and a DiRocco two-RBI single made it 7-4. Another single from Heyder cut the lead to three.Â
Dwyer singled in a runner in the third, and a balk allowed Foglia to score 9-5.Â
After a scoreless fourth inning, Oneonta scored four more runs in the fifth. Seniors Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) and Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) each hit doubles to bring in a pair of runners, making it 13-6. Farmingdale had three straight batters ground out to Dwyer at second base in the bottom of the frame. The Oneonta lead built to 18-9 in the eighth, and senior Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) struck out two rums in the bottom of the inning. Liquori capped off the ninth inning with a two-RBI double to right field. Oneonta shut out Farmingdale in the final frame, with junior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) striking out one batter.Â
The Red Dragons finished with 11 stolen bases, with Dwyer having four.
Oneonta continues its Florida trip on Tue. Mar. 12 to face Rutgers-Camden at 1:15 p.m. in Auburndale, FL at Lake Myrtle Field 4.
