Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) finished with three goals and an assist, while senior
Eric Nicholson (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) ended with a goal and two assists. The Red Dragons moved to 4-5 on the season, 0-2 in the SUNYAC, and the Knights improved to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
O'Neil netted the first goal of the game after he received a pass from Nicholson on a man-up opportunity, then sophomore
Daniel Macchiarella (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) found senior
Evan Kelly (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) near the top of the attack area and scored top shelf to give Oneonta a 2-1 lead at 10:58. Geneseo closed out the quarter with four straight goals to go up 5-2.
Junior
Vincent Herbstman (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) beat his defender and sprinted towards the goal crease to score his first goal of the season at 13:18 in the second. Macchiarella fought past his defender to score off a bounce shot with 9:49 left in the half and brought the Red Dragons within one, 5-4. Oneonta netted one more in the second quarter when O'Neil recovered the ground ball off senior
Matthew Krieg's (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) shot and scored on the putback, however Geneseo entered halftime ahead 7-5.
Freshman
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) ran with the ball through an open lane towards the front of the net for Oneonta's first goal in the third quarter, then a minute later O'Neil passed the ball to Nicholson on the other side of the net for an 8-7 deficit at 11:24. After Robert Boneillo scored for the Knights, Nicholson fed a behind the back pass to O'Neil who was cutting towards the net for the goal to make it 9-8 heading into the fourth. Sophomore
Aidan Greene (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) netted his first goal of the season and tied it at nine with 14:21 to play, however Geneseo closed out the game with a 7-1 stretch. Hnis tallied the final Oneonta goal off a pass from senior
Andrew Guinto (Syracuse/West Genesee) with 2:15 to go.
Hnis finished with two goals and Macchiarella had one goal and one assist. Senior
Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) made 15 saves and freshman
Ben Thayer (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) came in for 1:19 and saved one shot.
Andrew Tittmann had 14 saves for Geneseo, Brady Sullivan finished with four goals and an assist.
The Knights outshot the Red Dragons, 56-39, while both teams picked up 27 ground balls.
Oneonta's next game is at Plattsburgh on Saturday, April 6, at 1 pm.
