Oneonta Splits Conference Twin Bill with Oswego

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team split the doubleheader with Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons (8-12, 1-5 SUNYAC) won the first game 9-6 and fell 8-6 in the second to the Lakers (7-8, 2-1 SUNYAC).

Game 1 - Oneonta 9, Oswego 6

Home runs from sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) and junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) powered Oneonta past Oswego 9-5 in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Oswego.

Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) reached first on a catcher error in the bottom of the first. Dwyer launched a home run to center field to bring in two runs and give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.

Oneonta tacked on two more runs in the third inning, with Hutter hitting a two-RBI home run to extend the lead to 4-0. The Red Dragons shut out the Lakers through the first five innings, with senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) striking out four batters.

Freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-0. Oswego looked to come back in the sixth inning, cutting the Oneonta lead to two runs. Blake Van Dreason hit an inside-the-park home run to make it 7-5.

Oneonta tacked on two runs in the eighth inning. Wurster scored on a Liquori sacrifice fly, and senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) reached home on a single from senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers).

Oswego scored one run in the ninth before the final two Lakers' batters flew out to left and center field.

Liquori (2-2) went 5.2 innings with nine hits, five runs, and four strikeouts. Graduate student Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) picked up the save, going 3.1 innings and only allowing one run.

Game 2 - Oswego 8, Oneonta 6

The Red Dragons fell 8-6 to the Lakers in a closely fought second game.

Junior Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) struck out two Oswego batters in the second inning, but the Lakers got on the board first in the third. Trey McGowan scored on an Anthony Barone sacrifice bunt, and Christian McCarthy hit a sacrifice fly to bring Van Dreason home.

Oneonta responded at the bottom of the fourth, with Dwyer reaching home due to a third-baseman error.

Oswego used a Jelani Hamer RBI single in the sixth to make it 3-1, but sophomore Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) singled home Hutter to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the frame.

Oswego looked to pull away in the eighth, with Hamer knocking a three-RBI home run to left field to put the score at 6-2. Trey McGowan brought in one more run following a single to left field, and Oswego walked in a bases-loaded run.

Hutter hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the eighth to lessen the Oswego lead to 8-3.

It came down to the ninth inning, and senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) hit an RBI single to right field to bring Jachens home, and Dwyer followed with an RBI single to make it 8-5. Turner scored on a fielder's choice to cut it to two runs. Oswego Richie Paul struck out the final Oneonta batter to end the game 8-6.
