ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â After trailing 12-0 in the sixth inning, the Oneonta baseball team cut the deficit to three runs before falling to Oswego 13-10 on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in the SUNYAC, while Oswego moves to 6-7 and 1-0 in the conference.Â
After a scoreless first inning, the Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Daniel Winchester doubled to center field to bring in a pair of runs before the final batter flew out to center field. Oneonta struggled to hit, and Oswego erupted for six runs and six hits in the third. The Lakers led off with two doubles, and Anthony Barone hit a two-RBI single to push the lead to 6-0. A Christian McCarthy single brought a run in, and Jelani Hamer hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to eight.Â
Back-to-back 1-2-3 innings followed before Oswego continued to build its lead. The Lakers capitalized on three Red Dragons' errors in the top of the fifth by making it an 11-0 game. Oneonta gave up a bases-loaded walk at the top of the sixth inning, and Oswego went ahead 12-0.
The Red Dragons got on the board at the bottom of the frame, with junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) leading off with a single to third. Sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) followed with a double to right field, and a Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) double to left center brought in two runs. Oneonta added two more runs to make it 12-4.
Oswego loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning before sophomore Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) came in to pitch. Duffy struck out the final two batters to keep the shutout inning.Â
Oneonta's offensive momentum carried over to the bottom of the seventh as the Red Dragons loaded the bases. Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) took advantage of the situation and hit a grand slam to center field to cut the lead to 12-9.Â
The Lakers answered with a run in the eighth inning, but the Red Dragons stayed alive, with Dwyer hitting an RBI double to bring senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) in for the score to make it 13-10.Â
Graduate student Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) struck out a Laker in the ninth to keep Oswego off the board, and Onetona had one final chance. Sophomore Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) walked, and sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit a single into right-center field. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with two outs, but a final ground out ended the comeback.Â
