ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team fought back from a 6-1 deficit but ultimately fell 6-5 to Cortland on Tuesday afternoon. Oneonta moves to 7-10 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland rises to 9-8-1 and 3-0 in the conference.Â
Cortland struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Chris Bonacci reached home after Dylan Mackenzie grounded out to third, and Mitchell Kelly doubled home Mat Bruno.Â
The visitors brought another run in in the second before Luke Schartner hit a double down the left-field line to extend the lead to 4-0.Â
Oneonta got on the board at the bottom of the sixth, with senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) reaching second on a second basemen error. Junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) hit a single to right field to bring Wurster for the score.Â
Cortland responded with two runs in the seventh. Nick Marola led off with a home run to left field, and a sacrifice fly brought Nolan Smith in for a run to make it 6-1.
Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) led off with a single to center field in the bottom of the frame. Senior Bradley hit a sacrifice bunt to put Liquori on third and junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) on second. Liquori scored on a single from junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor). Oneonta added two more runs following a Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) single to cut the lead to 6-4.Â
Hutter knocked a single to right center to bring sophomore Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) home in the bottom of the eighth as Oneonta made it 6-5.Â
Cortland went 1-2-3 to bat in the ninth, and Oneonta had one final chance. Sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) reached second on an error, but a fly out to left field and strikeout ended the comeback.Â
Foglia and Hutter both had two hits, while Kaseta recorded two RBI.Â
Oneonta continues SUNYAC play on Fri. Mar. 29 at home against Oswego at 3 p.m.
