OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team started SUNYAC play with a 58-45 road victory over Oswego, Tuesday evening. The Red Dragons held onto the lead from the late first quarter to the end of the game and capped off the win with a late run to improve to 3-3 on the season, 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Lakers dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) led the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, the fourth double-double of her career. Sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) shot 6-for-9 from the floor and finished with a career-high 13 points and four steals, and junior
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) recorded 10 points, five boards and the game-high four assists.
In a back and forth beginning, senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) knocked down a couple midrange jumpers while Desrats and Schwarzbeck scored a few baskets inside the paint to keep the game tied at 10. Zuntag's first basket put Oneonta ahead for the remainder of the game with 3:51 left in the first and sparked an 11-2 run to put them ahead 21-12 at the end of the quarter.
The Lakers pulled within four at 7:59 in the second quarter then the Red Dragons scored 11 unanswered to go up 33-18 with 3:49 to go in the half. During the run, senior
Molly Coyne (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) hit two at the line and drilled a deep two-pointer from the top of the key, and Schwarzbeck split a pair at the line. Senior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) and Desrats each scored inside the paint, then senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) drove towards the basket for the final bucket of the run. Oswego's Shania Iglesias recorded the last seven points of the half to bring the Lakers within eight, 33-25.
Zuntag scored a couple baskets and Desrats knocked down a triple in the third quarter, but Oswego pulled within five points, 40-35, entering the fourth. The Lakers made it a one-possession game multiple times early in the final quarter, however the Red Dragons used the final 6:54 to put the game out of reach with a 14-4 run. Zuntag scored the first six points of the stretch before Desrats drove past two defenders for a layup. Brown pump faked her defender to knock down a jumper from the wing, then Schwarzbeck recorded the team's final four points from the line.
Brown finished with eight points and two steals, while Coyne recorded six points and five rebounds. Iglesias led the Lakers with 18 points and six rebounds, Macey DeOrdio added 13 points and six boards.
Oneonta shot 39.7 percent from the floor and held a 46-33 rebounding advantage, while Oswego shot 32.1 percent from the field.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Friday, December 6, against Buffalo State at 5:30 pm in Dewar Arena.
