CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO – The Oneonta women's basketball team was defeated by Bridgewater (Va.) College, 53-37, in their first game at the Puerto Rico Clasico, Thursday afternoon. Senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) led the team with 10 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field, and brought in three rebounds, and sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) shot 3-for-4 and finished with eight points, three rebounds, and three steals. The Eagles improved to 10-1 overall and the Red Dragons moved to 4-5 on the season.
Brown gave Oneonta the first lead then Bridgewater scored seven unanswered for a 7-2 advantage at 3:12. Desrats got the Red Dragons within one with a pair of buckets inside the paint, however the Eagles went on a 14-4 run to go up 21-10 with 3:59 to play in the first half.
Oneonta pulled themselves to within four with a 7-0 stretch in the final minutes of the half. Senior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) started the run with a pair of free throws, then Desrats scored inside the paint. In the closing seconds, Wakin passed the ball out to sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) who knocked down a three-pointer for a 21-17 deficit at the break.
Bridgewater scored the first six points in the third quarter to extend their lead to doubled digits. During the quarter, Brown drilled a triple and the other Red Dragons scored from the free throw line, however the Eagles led 38-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
Oneonta was unable to cut the lead to single digits in the final 10 minutes of play. Brown recorded five points in the quarter, senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) hit a jumper in the paint, and Wakin and sophomore
Angelena Giuliano (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) scored from the line.
Jay Garcia was one of three Eagles to score in double figures and led the group with 13 points and eight rebounds. Bridgewater shot 37.5 percent from the field while Oneonta shot 22.4 percent from the floor and held a 37-29 rebounding advantage. Zuntag led the team with seven rebounds.
The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow, December 19, to take on Randolph College for their final game of the Puerto Rico Clasico starting at 3 pm EST.
