ONEONTA, N.Y. - For the first time since 2019, the Oneonta women's soccer team is heading to the SUNYAC Tournament. The Red Dragons secured the sixth seed after finishing 5-9-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the conference.
Oneonta opens the first round at Oswego (9-6-1, 5-3-1 SUNYAC) on Sat. Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
The Red Dragons recorded shutouts in all five SUNYAC victories, the most conference wins in a season since 2017. Junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) leads the Oneonta offense with eight points on three goals and two assists. Sophomore Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added three goals this season, while freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) has two goals and an assist. Sophomore Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) scored twice, and both were game-winning goals.
Also tallying goals for the Red Dragons are junior Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy), sophomores Caroline Schimitsch (Little Neck, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) and Katie Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), and senior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook). Senior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) leads the team with three assists.
Junior Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) has been the primary Oneonta goalkeeper, starting 14 games. Meehan was named SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week twice with three shutouts and 76 saves (.792) this season.
The winner of this game advances to the SUNYAC Semifinals at Cortland on Sat. Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. On the other side of the bracket, Buffalo State plays at Fredonia on Saturday at noon. The winner there plays at New Paltz.
