FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Fredonia Blue Devils scored in both halves to secure a 2-0 victory over the Oneonta women's soccer time on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons finish the regular season at 5-9-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils move to 10-7-0 and 5-4-0 in the conference. Oneonta secures the sixth seed in the SUNYAC playoffs and will play third-seeded Oswego on Nov. 2.
After some back-and-forth shots to start the first half, sophomore Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had an attempt blocked following a corner kick. The Blue Devils scored in the 26th minute when Kerrigan Driskell scored off a pass from Annie Gondek to make it 1-0. Fredonia held Oneonta without a shot for the remainder of the half, while Katie Sellers fired two shots on goal in the final minutes. Junior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) made the stop on both.
Freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) took a shot at 55:28 that was turned aside by Fredonia goalie Abby Szmkowiak. A pair of Sellers' shots sailed wide and high, but she broke through at 60:36 after scoring on a pass from Grace Auer.
Oneonta mustered two more shots in the second, with sophomore Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) taking a bottom-right attempt but could not find the back of the net.
Fredonia out shot Oneonta 19-7 and held a 5-1 corner kick advantage.
Meehan finished with seven saves, while Szymkowiak had three.
Oneonta next plays in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Wed. Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at Oswego.
