CANTON, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team picked up its fifth shutout of the season, defeating Canton 2-0 in conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 5-7-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Roos fall to 1-12-2 and 0-7-0 in the conference.
The Canton offense started quickly by taking three opening shots within the first 11 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Amelia Cataldo (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) stopped a shot from Shannon Platt in the 10th minute, and the Red Dragons countered with a high shot from sophomore Katie Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) at 12:37. Doherty fired again in the 14th minute, but goalie Skylar Williams made the save.
Oneonta kept the pressure up after the 20th minute, with senior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) taking shots on goal. Kealey took three consecutive shots for the Red Dragons and finally broke through the Canton defense in the 36th minute. Kealey made a spin move to break past the Roos' defender and crossed the shot into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0. She nearly scored again two minutes later but struck post instead.
Oneonta dominated the second half, outshooting Canton 8-1. In the 66th minute, Doherty scored her first career goal after chipping the ball over the goalie into the right side of the box to make it 2-0.
Oneonta did not let up, and sophomore Hannah McNally (Centereach, NY/Centereach) took a pair of shots in the 69th minute. Junior Lauren Goyette (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) hit the top of the crossbar at 69:49, but the game remained the same.
Cataldo finished with one save, while Williams had six.
Oneonta outshot Canton 16-6 and held a 10-2 corner kick advantage.
