ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Freshman Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) netted her first career goal as the Oneonta women's soccer team defeated Keene State 2-0 in the opening round of the Mayor's Cup on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 2-0-1 with the win, while the Owls fall to 1-1-1.Â
Oneonta rattled off three shots within the first 16 minutes, with sophomores Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) firing center on goal. Despite their efforts, Keene goalkeeper Riley Andriski turned the shots aside. The Owls countered with a Riley Devine attempt at 20:29, but goalie Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) made the save.Â
After a foul on Ring, the ball went to Dashnow, who scored her first collegiate goal at 33:03 to put Oneonta ahead 1-0.Â
In the second half, Keene's Katie Hattie fired a shot center, but Meehan again made the stop. In the 55th minute, Ring crossed the ball in front of the Owls' goal. Andriski dived for the ball, but it was just out of reach, and fifth-year Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) chipped the shot over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Oneonta only allowed two more shots as they held on for the shutout.Â
Oneonta led 12-9 in shots, while corners were tied 5-5.Â
Meehan finished with five saves, and Andriski had six.Â
Oneonta hosts Rutgers-Camden on Sun. Sept. 10 at noon for the second day of the Mayor's Cup.
