ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) recorded the first Oneonta women's soccer hat trick since 2017 as the Red Dragons defeated the Saxons 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Oneonta moves to 1-0-1 overall, while Alfred falls to 0-2.
Ring was all over the Saxons' defense and took two early shots on goal at the 15th and 24 minutes that Alfred goalkeeper Kiani Barnard-Pratt turned aside. Her persistence paid off in the 24th minute when King drove in from the right side of the Alfred goal and chipped the shot in near the right post.Â
Oneonta added a second goal before halftime when the Red Dragons cross the ball from the right side of the Saxons' net. The goalkeeper could not grab the ball, and Ring jumped on the shot to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead.Â
Ring was gunning for the third goal, and Barnard-Pratt stopped a shot at 59:20. Two minutes later, Ring broke through the defense, had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and quickly found the back of the net.
Alfred prevented the shutout in the 75th minute following a Oneonta yellow card. Alyssa Smith lined up and slipped the ball into the top left corner of the net.Â
The Red Dragons added one more when junior Brooke Matura (Northport, NY/Northport) sprinted straight up the middle and juked out the goalkeeper for her first career goal. Oneonta nearly scored in the final seconds when sophomore Michaela Gordon (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) was left alone and struck the ball into the middle of the net, but the goal made the save.Â
Sophomore Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) made three saves in the win.Â
Oneonta returns to action on Sat. Sept. 9 to host the first day of the Mayor's Cup Tournament. The Red Dragons play Keene St. at noon.Â
