ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 13 Oneonta men's soccer team took control with two goals early in the first half and went on to win 3-0 against Farmingdale State, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0 on the season, while the Rams dropped to 2-2-1.
Though it was a win for Oneonta, head coach
Iain Byrne was not thrilled with the style of play. "We seemed somewhat sluggish today, and our attacking play never gained any momentum," said Byrne.
Farmingdale goalie Justin Silva fouled sophomore
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) in the penalty box to set up Oneonta's first scoring opportunity in the ninth minute. Senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) took the penalty kick for the Red Dragons and bested Silva, kicking it into the lower left side of the net. Two minutes later, Oneonta added to their lead when sophomore
Sam Rogers (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) worked the ball from the top of the box down to the right-side baseline and centered it to junior
Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) for the goal. Mancias Magana and junior
Derek Marques (Somers, N.Y./Somers) had a few more shots to extend the lead before halftime but were stopped by Silva. Â
In the 50th minute, the Rams finally registered a shot on goal off the leg of Joesph Raso, however it was easily saved by senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). Oneonta tallied their last goal in the 68th minute when Mancias Magana found junior
Owen Siegel (Liberty, N.Y./Liberty) in transition who brought the ball into the box and kicked it past Silva just inside the right post and in. The Red Dragons made several substitutions in the 78th minute, including junior
Jax Flugel (Rochester, N.Y.) at goalie. Flugel closed out the final minutes saving three shots to keep the shutout intact. Â
Flugel ended with three saves and Hanna finished with two for Oneonta while Silva finished with eight.
The Red Dragons outshot Farmingdale 18-7 and had a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Oneonta returns to action on Wednesday for the start of SUNYAC play against New Paltz on Red Dragon Field at 4 pm.Â
