ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 15 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team captured the 2023 Mayor's Cup trophy after they defeated St. Lawrence, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded the game-winning goal with a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Sophomore
Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) was named the tournament's offensive MVP totaling two goals and senior
John Bernardi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was named the defensive MVP as the Red Dragons backline limited their opponents to three shots on goal in the tournament. Zingaro was named to the All-Tournament team alongside seniors
Richard Portogallo (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa),
Robert Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls), and sophomore
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck). Oneonta improved to 4-0 on the season, while St. Lawrence dropped to 0-2-2.
"It was your typical slow start in a back-to-back game, but once we found our passing range, we created some good chances and managed to keep the clean sheet for the win and tournament trophy," said head coach
Iain Byrne.
Mancias Magana had a couple chances to get the Red Dragons on the board early but had both shots saved by Ben Woelfinger. In the 29th minute, Oneonta had another great look when sophomore
Joe Holder (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Warwick) found Mancias Magana up the field who worked his way towards the center of the penalty box for an open shot and beat Woelfinger but hit the left post. Holder and sophomore
Dillon Kelly (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon) got a shot on target shortly after, however Woelfinger was there to make the stops to keep the game scoreless at half.
Sophomore
Sam Rogers (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) had the first opportunity in the second half to get the Red Dragons on the board in the 49th minute when he dribbled towards the net for an open look but missed just to the right of the net. In the 58th minute, junior
Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) was about to shake off his defender in the penalty box but was tripped up and fouled, allowing Oneonta to take a penalty kick. Zingaro took the kick for the Red Dragons and went to the lower right of the net to beat Woelfinger. Oneonta controlled the rest of the game and was able to hold off St. Lawrence for the victory.
Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) did not record a save in his fourth shutout of the season, while Woelfinger finished with six saves.
The Red Dragons outshot the Saints 17-4 and had a 12-1 corner kick advantage.
Oneonta is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to take on Utica at 7 pm.
