ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Junior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) netted the equalizer goal in the 83rd minute as the Oneonta women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw against Hartwick on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 0-0-1 following the season opener, while the Hawks match the record.Â
After a slow start, Hartwick attacked first when Madi McGuire fired a shot on goal in the 14th minute that sophomore goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) turned aside. Senior Gianna Gritzmacher (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) had a near chance at 28:22, but the Hawks' goalkeeper Meghan Perry made the stop. Freshman Keira Dashrow recorded one final shot in the 40th minute as the teams went scoreless into halftime.Â
Hartwick's Gianna Cacciola shot high at 54:03 but scored four minutes later following a pass from Grace Byrne. Oneonta picked up their offense with shot attempts from sophomore Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and Dashnow. A Hawks' foul in the 83rd minute gave the Red Dragons the chance they needed when junior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) lined up on the right side of the Hartwick goal. Lowney crossed the ball into the left corner, where Schwizer rose above attackers and defenders to head the ball into the back of the net.Â
With time winding down, Oneonta had one final chance when Nicholson struck the ball into the goalkeeper at 89:39.Â
Oneonta outshot Hartwick 8-7, while the Hawks held a 4-3 corner kick advantage.Â
Meehan finished with two saves, while Perrt had four.Â
