NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team closed the regular season with two games against New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks took the first game 3-2, and then the Red Dragons won the second 14-10. 

After a scoreless first inning, senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) launched a home run to right field in his first at-bat to put Oneonta up 1-0. New Paltz tied in the bottom of the frame when Matt Ascanio singled in a run. Junior Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) held the Hawks to one run and struck out two batters. 

Three scoreless innings followed, and Rooney struck out three more Hawks. In the top of the sixth, Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) scored on an error to make it 2-1. Oneonta held a narrow lead until New Paltz scored two runs in the seventh. Oulette reached home on an error to make it 2-2, and then a sacrifice fly brought another runner. The Red Dragons could not get into scoring position afterward as the Hawks won 3-2. 

Rooney (5-2) finished with six strikeouts, while McGovern had four for the Hawks.

Oneonta always led in a high-scoring game two, with freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hitting his first-career home run in the second inning to make it 2-0. New Paltz tied in the third, but Oneonta scored three more runs in the top of the fourth. Jacoby reached home on a Hawks' error, and then Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) singled in sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor). The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 5-2 when Foglia singled in a run.

New Paltz tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth to cut it to 5-4, but Oneonta responded immediately with a pair of runs in the sixth.  

The Red Dragons hit double digits in the top of the eighth when Liquori hit his second home run of the day to center field. Gilkey hit a sacrifice fly which senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) scored on, and then Ottaviano hit an RBI single.

New Paltz pulled within two, but another two Oneonta runs secured the victory. 

Gilkey went 4-for-6 with three runs and one RBI, while six Red Dragons had two hits.

Junior Michael Sadowski (Queens, NY/Queens Metropolitan) struck out seven Hawks in the win. 

Oneonta will be the third seed in the SUNYAC playoffs on May 11. More information will be provided when it comes.
